Dorothea Lange
(1895-1965)
Dorothea Lange is one of America's greatest documentary photographers. She is known for pictures from the Great Depression and migratory farm workers. Dorothea was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. She died in San Francisco, California. Dorothea Lange studied photography at Columbia University. Dorothea worked for Arnold Genthe in New York until she moved to San Francisco and opened up her own studio. Her photographs were always based on people, and peoples experiences in life. Dorothea used the Graflex series D camera. The purpose of her pictures is to communicate with the world the struggles in life. She does this to try and change the world. |
Lewis Hine
(1847-1940)
Lewis Hine was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He studied sociology at the University of Chicago, Columbia University and New York University. Lewis first worked at a teacher who encouraged kids to use photography as an educational medium. His photography work focused on immigrants. During his photography business, he photographed thousands of Immigrants in the United States. He was employed as a photographer to show social change and reform. He worked for the Russell Sage Foundation. He not only photographed immigrants, but also child labor, work forces and struggling families. During his photography career, he used the Graflex camera. |
Alfred Eisenstaedt
(1898-1995)
Alfred Eisenstaedt was born in Dirschau, Poland and died in Massachusetts. He served in the German Army for World War I in the years 1916 to 1918. He started out as an amateur and worked up to being a pro in 1929. Alfred was highly skilled at using the 35-mm Leica camera. In Europe, Alfred photographed many famous people including Adolf Hitler, many Hollywood celebrities, and dictators. He graduated from the Hohenzollern Gymnasium in Berlin. Alfred was hired to Life magazine and immigrated to America in 1936 for his new job. Once he lived in America, he lived in New York making connections with his subjects. |
Ansel Adams
(1902-1984)
Ansel Adams was a photographer by also an environmentalist. He was born and lived in Sand Francisco, California. His first photograph was taken in 1916. He started taking photographs because he was a very shy and reserved kid. He was homeschooled and found the joy of nature in his solitary. In his time as a child, he taught himself how to play piano and how to read music. When he became part of a Sierra Nevada group, he became close with a colleague named Edward Weston. He used a film camera and took pictures of nature. He took pictures of nature to promote that we as humans need to protect our planet. |
Margaret Bourke-White
(1904-1917)
Margaret Bourke-White worked for Life Magazine in the photojournalism section. She lived in New York and used a film camera. The purpose of her photography was to highlight the pain people have. She took pictures of a variety of things such as battles, wars and tragedies. She eventually moved to Cleveland, Ohio where she opened up her own studio. |
